Garage Door Safety
Your garage door is the largest moving object in your home, weighing generally up to and exceeding 200kg. To ensure proper and safe function, it is recommended to have your door serviced regularly at 12-month intervals. The need for servicing is increased in certain areas such as the Mornington Peninsula where the salt in the air may cause early corrosion of moving parts. Parts such as cables, hinges, springs and drums which play a vital role in the operation of your door need to be regularly serviced and frequently visually observed for wear and tear. Your garage door is under very high tension and for this reason it is recommended to have a professional technician take care of any repairs or maintenance. Any procedure to repair or replace door hardware without the proper tools and training can result in serious injury or death.
Follow these tips to keep your family safe and hassle-free operation for years of your garage door.
1. Never attempt to repair garage door springs or cables. These parts are under extreme tension. Contact a professional technician.
2. Never stand or walk under a moving door.
3. Don’t allow children to play with door controllers. Educate them with proper, safe use.
4. Keep your door maintained by having regular annual servicing by a professional technician.
5. Avoid a dangerous environment by having your squeaky misaligned door inspected by a professional. Doors which are improperly installed or have been hit by a vehicle will affect the operating system promoting premature wear to parts and door opener.
6. Wash your door with water and a cloth at least every 6 months (more frequently if living in salty or industrial areas)

How do I get my car out of the garage during a power outage? All garage door motors have a release mechanism to disengage gear so that you can manually open door. Usually it’s a cord hanging down from the motor which you need to pull to disengage. If the door seems excessively heavy to open then you will need your door re-tensioned. When the power comes back on, simply pull the release cord again to re-engage motor gear.
